A Day at the Races: Whitchurch Club’s Newbury Trip Was a Total Winner

🥓 Breakfast, Banter & Boarding

There’s something nostalgic about a big day out with your local club. This time it was a day a the races. The kind of day where you forget your worries, put a tenner on a horse you’ve never heard of, and end up shouting at the finish line like your life depends on it.

That was exactly the kind of day Whitchurch Club delivered this Saturday, as over 60 of us piled into a coach headed for Newbury Racecourse.

But before the betting began, we started the day in style—with breakfast back at the club. A full English, strong coffee, and the smell of fried bacon in the air. You could already feel the excitement bubbling.

It wasn’t just about the food—it was about the familiar faces, the friendly chat, and the promise of a great day ahead. There were race day newbies asking how to read the racecard, seasoned punters swapping horse names, and the usual one or two people convinced they were about to fund a holiday with a £5 each-way.

By 12 noon, the coach arrived, and we boarded with full bellies and even fuller hopes.

🚌 All Aboard the Banter Bus

The coach journey to Newbury deserves its own section. From the moment the wheels started turning, the laughter didn’t stop. Seat mates became betting buddies. There were predictions flying around and plenty of bold claims like, “I’ve got a sure thing in Race 3,” which we all know translates to, “I liked the name.”

Someone cracked open a can, someone else pulled out a bag of mints to “freshen up before the bets,” and a playlist of 80s sing-alongs might’ve snuck its way onto the speakers.

It’s amazing how fast a 45-minute trip goes when you’re surrounded by friends, fun, and a healthy dose of pre-race nerves.

🏇 A Day at the Races: Newbury Welcomes Whitchurch

We arrived at Newbury Racecourse with blue skies overhead and energy to spare. The atmosphere was buzzing with a mix of seasoned racegoers, first-timers, and of course, us lot—clearly the loudest group in sight.

Included in the £60 ticket price was:

  • Entry to the races
  • A £10 food voucher
  • A free Tote bet
  • Return coach travel
  • Breakfast and two drinks back at the club

And we didn’t waste any time. Some headed straight for the bars, others to the paddock to check out the horses. A few made a beeline to the betting kiosks to place that all-important first bet.

The first race was at 1:25pm, and by then, we were deep into strategies, wild guesses, and debates like, “Do you think Thunder Whisperer sounds fast?”

“I picked one horse because it looked moody—turned out to be the best decision I made all year,”
Steve, £120 up and already planning what to buy

💷 Big Wins, Bigger Laughs

Over the afternoon, we cheered, groaned, high-fived, and maybe shed a tiny tear or two when our favourite lost by a nose. But that’s racing, isn’t it?

Some of us couldn’t win a coin toss. Others walked away £200+ richer, looking like they’d just solved the secret to life.

Chris, for example, turned up with £100 in his wallet, placed a few well-timed bets, and walked away with £300—and a huge grin that probably hasn’t left his face since.

“I came with a hundred quid to bet, I’m leaving with £300 and a sunburn. Absolute result,”
Chris, semi-professional gambler for the day

And it wasn’t just about the money. There were moments of pure comedy—like the bloke who thought he was betting on Horse 3 but accidentally backed the jockey’s hat colour—and the cheers that erupted when someone’s “just for fun” outsider romped home first.

We didn’t all win money, but we all won memories.

🎥 Local Celebrity in the Ranks…

Now here’s something most people didn’t realise…

Among the racegoers was a special guest: Elsie, from the YouTube channel Happily Ever Elsie. That’s right—our very own local YouTuber was in the mix, filming the action, sharing the experience, and no doubt reviewing the race snacks like a pro.

Elsie’s charm and bubbly energy didn’t go unnoticed, and she’s set to release a video of the day very soon, giving a whole new perspective on the outing—from the coach ride to the cheering crowds.

So if you fancy reliving the magic (or seeing if you made it into the background), keep your eyes peeled on her channel.

🍻 The Journey Home & Two Drinks to Finish

By the time the last race was run, wallets were lighter or heavier, and legs were ready for a sit down. We hopped back on the coach, tired but buzzing.

Let’s just say the return journey was louder than the outbound one. There was storytelling, and more than a few declarations like, “Next time, I’m betting on names that sound like action heroes.”

Back at the club, we were welcomed with two free drinks each. Perfect for toasting the winners, soothing the losses, or just topping off a brilliant day.

The post-race chatter filled the room. Everyone had something to say—whether it was the thrill of watching their horse win, the one that slipped through their fingers, or the weird hotdog they ate halfway through Race 4.

🙌 Why This Day Mattered

This wasn’t just about horses and bets. It was about community.

It was about shared laughs, shared buses, and shared memories. Whitchurch Club nailed every detail, from breakfast to drinks, making it easy for people to simply turn up and enjoy the ride.

And for many, that’s exactly what we need. A day to unwind. A reason to wear your best shirt. A chance to shout at a racetrack horse without judgement.

If you’ve never been on one of these club days out, now’s the time. Whether you’re a betting expert or just there for the vibes, there’s something in it for everyone.

📅 Same Time Next Year?

If there’s one thing everyone agreed on, it’s this:

We’ll be back.

Bigger hats, bolder bets, and probably the same group of legends trying to remember which horse they picked.

Thanks again to Whitchurch Club for putting together a flawless day out—you’ve raised the bar for local events.

See you at the next one—just don’t forget your lucky socks. 🐎🍻
